On Monday 5 June, we met for the inaugural DNA at Darlings

Thank you to the six that came along

You forced me to get my act together.

I had to figure out what to put in an interesting evening introduction about DNA.

All 7.9 billion of us on planet earth have DNA.

So much more is going to be learnt about it in the next few years.

We did a quick bit of data gathering on 6 topics.

When any of us get DNA test results, we can see how it compares.

Attendees chose where to stand along the scale of High Likelihood to Low Likelihood.

This is based on what they observe about themselves in their daily life.

Mosquito Bite Frequency

Here’s where everyone stood on the scale for Mosquito Bite Frequency

Mosquitoes love to nibble on the people on the left

hence they’re standing at the High Likelihood end
as indicated by the blue post-it note stuck on the lamp

and they leave the people on the right alone

hence they’re standing at the Low Likelihood end
as indicated by the orange post-it note stuck on the other lamp.

The only person with DNA results is myself the host, Simon Darling.

23andMe says I’m in the middle of the range.

In real life, I don’t get bitten any more or less than others

Fear of Public Speaking

Here’s where everyone says they are on the scale for Fear of Public Speaking

Here’s where I am with my DNA result: Low Likelihood

In real life,
I don’t have a fear of public speaking

Near Sightedness

Here’s where everyone says they are on the scale for Nearsightedness …

Here’s where I am with my DNA result:

Increased Likelihood

In real life, I am Near Sighted (i.e. I need glasses to see things far away)

Hate the Sound of Chewing

Here’s where everyone put themselves on Hate the Sound of Chewing…

Here’s where I am with my DNA result:

In the middle

In real life, the sound of chewing doesn’t bother me.

Wake-Up Time

Here’s where everyone put themselves on Wake-Up Time

Here’s where I am with my DNA result:

Early

In real life, I am an early bird

Sildenafil (Viagra) side effects

Here’s where everyone put themselves on Sildenafil (Viagra) Side Effects

No one knew because they’ve never had a pharmacogenetic test to find out (and it’s not relevant for women anyway)

Here’s where I am with my DNA result:

Use with caution (!!!)

In real life, I had no idea whether I was at risk of side effects.

Now I know I need to use with caution (or not at all!)

23andMe is recommended if you want to find out your results.

Buy the 23andMe+ one to get the full battery of results. I don’t get commission.

There is a DNA at Darlings once a month.

If you have a friend interested, forward them a link to the homepage that gives the date of the next one.

They will thank you for telling them about it.
